Angel developers get their knuckles rapped

Builders developing the Angel site for Sainsburys have demolished the front wall without permission, and they have been told by council officials to restore it to acceptable standards.

Concerns have been raised about the missing frontage of the historic building, and the developers will have to build a new wall which is close to the original in appearance.

Caerleon’s three Labour councillors, who objected to the development in the first place, are monitoring further progress at the site closely.

More than 2,000 people signed a petition opposing the original development. But Newport’s planning committee decided a year ago that there were insufficient grounds to reject the application, despite worries about an increase in traffic and the possible effect on local businesses.

The developers have been told to submit plans for the restoration of the building, otherwise they could face an enforcement order.
