Angel supermarket battle is lost

  • Despite the opposition of 1700 residents and Caerleon’s three Labour councillors, the planning application to convert the Angel into a Sainsbury’s store has been accepted by Newport City Council’s planning committee.

Councillor Paul Huntley, who is a member of the committee, voted against the application along with two other committee members, but they were defeated by seven votes to three.

A site meeting at the Angel was held last month, but  seven councillors eventually accepted officers’ recommendations that there were insufficient grounds to reject the application under current planning law.
