Caerleon Labour Councillors ensure Caerleon Town Hall Toilets are made available to the public

  • Continuing austerity measures, imposed on us by the UK Tory Government, and years of cuts to Newport City Council’s budget means difficult decisions are having to be made.

Following a public consultation for the 2018/19 budget proposals, which included the closure of public toilets across Newport, the decision was taken by the full council to close on–street conveniences.
However, Caerleon Labour Councillors, Gail Giles and Jason Hughes,  have continued to push for alternative provision in Caerleon and with the support of the Leader of Newport City Council, Councillor Debbie Wilcox and following a series of meetings with the Cabinet Member for Culture & Leisure, Councillor David Mayer, and Cabinet Member for Streetscene, Councillor Roger Jeavons,  over the last few months , Gail and Jason, have succeeded in ensuring Caerleon Town Hall toilets will be made available to the public during its opening hours Monday to Friday as well as for town events such as:

    • Newport ABP Marathon – 29th April
    • Folk concert in St Cadoc’c Church – 18th May
    • Museum’s Empire Event in the Amphitheatre – 2nd and 3rd June
    • Caerleon Arts Festival – 5th – 15th July
    • Tour of Britain – 2nd to 9th September which may go through Caerleon (days and route to be confirmed, and not on the website as of today)
    • Remembrance services – 10th November, St Cadoc’s Church, plus possibly others to be confirmed
    • Christmas in Caerleon – 8th December

The Town Hall is a well maintained community facility that is an asset within the area and will be managed by a Newport City Council employee, ensuring the facility is clean and safe at all times.
This decision will also ensure that the toilets will be accessible to the public in Caerleon for up to 2 hours longer than previous availability with the old public toilet block.
Meanwhile, Gail and Jason continue to seek a means to provide public toilet provision in Broadway.
