Caerleon Labour Party want a change in the law on child punishment

  • Caerleon Labour members want the Welsh Government to change the law on child punishment.

Currently, in England and Wales, parents who resort to physical punishment can use the right of “reasonable punishment of children” as a defence.

The National Assembly Labour Party is conducting a review of the current law in Wales, and has put the issue out for consultation. Responses have to be submitted to the Welsh Labour Party ([email protected]) by September 2nd.

At its July meeting Caerleon party members agreed to send the following response to Welsh Labour:

“The law to remove from parents the defence of reasonable punishment should be introduced by the Welsh Government before the next election. This should be underpinned by appropriate funding/resources to support all those involved with the care of children.”

A copy of the response will also be sent to Newport West CLP.
