Caerleon Labour Party members have expressed their relief at the news of the Tories’ defeat over proposed boundary changes. Last year they sent in strong objections to the plans.
Under the proposed legislation, Newport’s two Parliamentary constituencies would have been reduced to one, with the Caerleon ward being transferred to Torfaen.
MPs voted by 334 to 292 to accept changes made by peers, meaning that the planned constituency shake-up will be postponed until 2018 at the earliest. Had the changes gone ahead it could have given the Conservatives an extra twenty seats at the next election.
It was the first time Lib Dem ministers have voted against their Conservative coalition colleagues in the Commons.
It means that Caerleon will remain part of Newport West at the next general election.
