Home truths about Theresa May at Caerleon Festival

  • Chris Edwards, a stalwart of Caerleon Labour Party for many years, has written a rib-splitting poem about Theresa May. It won her a place on the shortlist at Caerleon Festival’s first All Wales Comic Verse Competition.

Entitled “Home Truths” it pokes fun at the Home Secretary at a time when a Populus Poll in the Times says that 46% want to see her sacked, making her the third most unpopular member of the cabinet. She was only narrowly beaten by Andrew Lansley and Jeremy Hunt.

    Chris’ poem:

    Home Truths

Could you blame the riots on the failure of the schools?

Could you call the parents and the local leaders fools?

Could you even threaten that you’d take their homes away?

Of course I couldn’t do it,

    But Theresa may.

Could you tell the public that policing would not fail,

That the bobby on the beat would put the criminals in jail?

Could you then reduce their hours, their numbers and their pay?

Of course I couldn’t do it,

    But Theresa may.

Could you reassure us all that Europe would recede,

That British law would satisfy our every pressing need?

Could you then let the US put a teenager away?

Of course I couldn’t do it,

    But Theresa may.

Would you sack a top official when the border checks were slack?

Would you tighten all procedures and put stringent methods back?

And would you then make staffing cuts and so increase delay?

Of course I couldn’t do it,

    But Theresa may.

Could you arrest Qatada before Strasbourg had it say?

Because you jumped the gun and you mistook the proper day?

Could you endure thereby we never, ever would be rid?

    O course I couldn’t do it,

    But Theresa bloody did!
