Rosemary to step down as an AM

  • Dame Rosemary Butler is standing down as the AM for Newport West at the next election, after a long and distinguished career. She was originally elected in 1973 as a Newport Labour Councillor for the Caerleon ward.

She went on to become Mayor and deputy leader of the Council before being elected as the Labour AM for Newport West at the National Assembly in 1999. She was a member of the first Labour Cabinet, with responsibilities for education, and went on to become Deputy Presiding Officer and finally Presiding Officer in 2012. She was awarded the DBE in this year’s New Years Honours for services to public life in Wales, in particular for her work on encouraging women to play a major role in public life.

She has always been one of the key players in the work of Caerleon Branch Labour Party, and we look forward to her continuing involvement and support. We wish her well!
