Rough sleeping in Newport City Centre is not a Caerleon issue, but one or two of our political opponents have raised the issue on Caerleon social media networks, and in the press.
The Council’s scrutiny committee recently recommended a city centre ban on rough sleeping, begging, fly posting, drinking alcohol and dogs not on a lead. The full council has not yet made a final decision.
But in view of criticism in the media, we asked Councillor Paul Cockeram, Newport Council’s Cabinet Member for People and Business for an update. He assured us that Newport City Council are fully committed to addressing the needs of the homeless, and only have problems with a small number of individuals who “choose to sleep rough or in some instances have other significant issues. “
